What is the Long Island Junior Chamber (LI Jaycees)?

Long Island’s premiere organization for young people, ages 18-40. The Long Island Junior Chamber (LI Jaycees) is an all-volunteer civic organization that runs social, community service, business and leadership development projects throughout the year.

We are part of a larger organization, the NYS Jaycees, which is a part of the US Jaycees, a founding member of Junior Chamber International (JCI). The term Jaycee is short for Junior Chamber of Commerce. The LIJC is a 501(c)(4) not-for-profit in the Long Island, New York (USA) area.

What is Junior Chamber International?

Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a worldwide federation of young leaders and entrepreneurs with nearly a quarter of a million members and millions of alumni. It’s an organization in which leaders meet, learn and grow.

The vision of the organization is to be a highly recognized worldwide source of successful young business, political, and social leaders… the voice of young leaders and entrepreneurs of the world.

What’s the purpose of the LIJC?

Jaycee members develop new skills and enhance existing ones by becoming involved with our many projects. Each of our events also has a high social component. By becoming involved in organizing projects for the community, members have the opportunity to realize hands-on experience that will ultimately sharpen one’s leadership and management skills, in addition to forming closer friendships with people their own age.

What kind of projects does the LIJC do?

The LIJC runs various projects throughtout the year in the four areas of opportunity: (1) Business Development; (2) Community Development; (3) Individual Development; and (4) Activities. Our projects are all designed to provide our members with the confidence and skills to achieve their goals, both personally and professionally. Some of our Community Development projects, like the Long Island Chili Cook-Off, raise money for charitable organizations. Others have a purely social compenent, like going to Islander games or playing Volleyball. We offer training seminars and networking forums like our Public Speaking Workshops and Entrepreneur Roundtables. Our projects are only limited by the imaginations of our members.

How much time is involved?

The Jaycees is completely voluntary, so you can commit as much time as you want, or are able. As with anything else in life, you get out of the Jaycees what you put into it. Those who benefit the most, get involved by joining a committee or running a project. The Jaycees revolves around your schedule and you can choose to participate in those projects or events that interest you, at your own discretion.

What can the LIJC offer me?

There are many advantages to becoming a member of the LIJC. Probably the most positive aspect of becoming a Jaycee is that you will have the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Our members come from a very diverse range of professions including accounting, legal, real estate, information technology and many other professions. You can build quite a professional network in the LIJC. Another positive aspect of becoming a Jaycee is the leadership and management skills that you will develop from your involvement. This experience can become extremely useful in your personal and professional life.
